Entrepreneurship Journey

The Challenge

High Stress levels and sleep deprivation cause by the workplace have been increasing day by day in the big cities, increasing the risk for heart diseases and burn outs. 1/6 of the Uk working population has been affected, causing 6.5 billion economic burden. The work environment has not been designed to accommodate healthy habits, reduction of stress that would increase workers productivity.

We created a multidisciplinary teams to produce a new business proposition and take part to College Wide Imperial Entrepreneurship competition.

The Solution

We created Anasa, an Urban retreat space where exhausted professional can go to during their break to relax, disconnect and rejuvenate.

It is a specially designed space with relaxations pods perfect for a quick recharge, providing a personalised experience according to individual needs. Anasa is specially equipped for disconnection. The space will also offer meditation sessions and a snack bar with health and energising snacks. Nap and nutrition aiming to increase productivity.

Discovery

At first Florian and I, were the only Service Designers in a group with 3 other business minds. We had at first to decide what is the area of our interest and how we could blend all of our skills together.  We create 2 ideation and brainstorming sessions for the team to come together and make some decisions. Then it was necessary to introduce the team to the design process and redesign a new method of working together as the time was limited and e had to be incredibly efficient.  As a result during this project we had to be more of process facilitators, making sure we are designing a new sustainable startup proposition that would match people’s needs and desires rather than having a starting idea and trying to find ways to enter the market which was more like the MBA approach. It was a great challenge to be working with people from so diverse backgrounds and we are Service Designers had to find new ways of collaborating and communicating efficiently.

After we decided on focusing on Wellbeing in the Workplace and we help an “all you need to know about Human Centered design marathon” in 2 days, we entered into our Research Phase. Zaina our Psychologist Specialist introduced us to the impact of Stress and Burnouts caused by the workplace environment and we then interviewed 20 working professionals in Canary Wharf. We had to iterate our interviewing approach in such a way that we could quickly create a trusting relationship with the professionals, ensuring them that we would not expose their mental state.

After collecting our insights, I organized two co-creative workshops to produce new Ideas to tackle our problem with 12 individuals participating.

Finally we started designing our proposition, testing with users, iterating and creating our final pitch for the competition, where we were finalists.

Research Insights

Understanding

In order to understand the workforce needs and what would make them be happier and healthier in the work place environment we did 20 interviews.

"People at work are falling asleep. The work load and stress is exhausting"

"I wish I could have a half an hour power nap after lunch without being scare of being fired by my manager."

"After working for 4-5 hours and lunch I am not functioning properly at work."

"I don't for how much longer I can last in this work. I catch it all."

"More than 10.000 Londoners are airing their dispare about a lack of decent sleep  on Twitter every month"

Impact of Sleep Deprivation

Major cause of both lost working days and productivity.

1/6 of working population in the UK is affected

6.5 billion direct cost of work related stress.

10.4 million days lost

1.6 trillion Global Economic burden

70-100 bn in the UK economic burden

High rates of Comorbidity i.e. Affects Physical Health as well

Opportunity Statement

How might we help London professionals reduce their stress levels and increase their productivity by providing a discreet space for them to refresh and rejuvenate during their working day.

Co-Creation

Workshop

At some point during our research we were a bit stuck with some particular ideas and we had to open up our minds to new possibilities.

I organised and facilitated a 2 hour workshops aiming to generate new ideas about how to disconnect and relax in the city for a short period of time.

The outcomes gave us new material to work with and experiment and test our existing ideas with the participants.

1. Spit the word

To put everyone in the mood and kickstart the workshop, participants we asked to say the first word that came to their minds in relation to the previous one. 3 rounds

2. Energy Journey

It was important for us to understand our users energy levels during the days and in which moments they needed a break.

We asked our participants to draw their energy levels during their day, what is the activity related to their low levels and what they do wake up. Then they had to present

Learnings

In this project I truly developed my collaboration skills and working with a multidisciplinary team.  We had a lot of challenges during this process of communicating but through workshops and hands on activities that I facilitated we managed to move forward and actually get a very good place in the Entrepreneurship competition.

For the first time I designed my end to end workshop which demonstrated to the team the value of Design processes in the business context.

At the same time I benefitted a lot from my experienced team in terms of business development, market research and startup financing and considerations that need to be taken into consideration, evolving my business designing skills.
